Sci-fi version of Spore? No!

Darkspore is not really a darker version of Spore. Sure, it’s almost named the same and it’s made by the same producers but it’s pretty different. You can no longer create your very own creature from the ground up. Instead you are “stuck” with a pre-set monster. You can, however, heavily customize these pre-set creatures. But not anywhere near to the extent of which you can customize monsters in Spore. These pre-sets kind of configurate themselves in the game as the heroes. ‘Cause that’s what they are, you fight with heroes in a squadron. Darkspore sports a heavy sci-fi theme and the speed of the gameplay is alot higher than in Spore.

You fight against the Darkspore, which are not to be mistaken with Darkspawn from the Dragon Age series! Although the concept is pretty much the same, the Dragon Age Darkspawn are demons / corrupted beings which the Darkspore are as well. The Darkspore are evil, defiled and corrupted versions of your heroes. They came because of an unforseen mutation in the DNA of the “good” monsters. Now they have multiplied, taken over half the galaxy, and must be destroyed.

The game seems to have a heavy focus on casual multi-player. It is very easy to find a group and do a mission with. The heroes are also defined in classes such as “tank” and “healer”. To define classes in this way it implies that fighting in a group will be very consistent throughout the game. In total there are 25 heroes, each with 3 “genetic variants” totaling 100 heroes in total. The way the game plays feels like controling 1 badass unit the same way as in a RTS game. Overall I must say I like it a lot, the game feels very nice to play. It reacts seamlessly to your input and is very polished. There is a lot of loot to gather and it’s just very cool to customize your heroes and go play online with them!

I have not had a chance to check out the PVP of the game yet but that seems very promising. There are also a lot of upgrades available for purchase in an in-game shop (called the “inventory”). I think people will have epic PVP battles in this game, all the ingredients are present in the game. It’s up to us to make something of it. Now please check out this multiplayer gameplay video!
